Hey plantbased foodies! What do you use to slather on your sandwiches and burgers? And what do you dip your potatoes wedges in? If you are someone following a fairly healthy diet, slathering a big blob of good old mayonnaise on your burger might be a big No-No. Secretly, I am hoping this post might change your mind to absolutely take that extra heaping of mayonnaise. But I guess your initial assumption that mayonnaise is unhealthy is not so far off. Traditionally, mayonnaise (also vegan) consist of oil and is loaded with refined sugars. If you don’t believe, next time in the supermarket check the label of the mayonnaise and let me know what the first 3 ingredients are. It’s usually oil, sugar and egg yolk. But you didn’t come to this place to hear about food restrictions, right? Exactly, because I got you covered here.
My recipe for my Vegan Sriracha Mayonnaise contains no eggs, is completely plantbased, sugarfree, oilfree and cholesterol free. You also won’t find any nuts or soy, so it’s super allergy friendly. So let’s ask the question: what are the two ingredients that make or break a great flavorsome mayonnaise? Funny enough, it’s the ones we have been bashing earlier: sugar and eggs. So how do we work this out in our healthy mayonnaise recipe? To mimic the egg like taste, I use a salt called kala namak. It usually sourced from Pakistan and you will find it in any well stocked wholefoods or organic supermarket. Get a glass for yourself, you will love it on avo toast and it will make you a killer mayonnaise. How do we get our mayonnaise slightly sweetish? Right, we use our beloved medjool dates. They do add sweetness but also fruitiness to the mayonnaise.
Lastly, throw in some Sriracha sauce for that extra zing. It add just the right balance between sweet, spicy and creamy. I wish you could have seen my face when making this mayo for the first time. It is so so good and until today, it’s one of my favorite plantbased sauces. Use it for burgers, wraps, sandwiches, as a dip and to stir into your potato salad.
