Today, I am showing you how to turn your usual hot chocolate mix into an adaptogenic elixir! Yes, that’s right! It’s funny because I was never a big fan of hot chocolate although my obsession for anything chocolate might suggest otherwise. But it wasn’t until I created an instant hot chocolate mix for my friend, which of course, I had to try before giving it away. And wow, it hit me right in the face. Mixed with hot almond milk, this Adaptogenic Hot Chocolate Elixier was warming, creamy and came with a proper flavor punch!
It makes a perfect gift for anyone that is close to your heart (and has a ‘sweet spot’ for chocolate). But what makes this hot choccie mix an elixir you might be wondering. And I agree, not all hot chocolates are created equally. By adding the two magically sounding adaptogens a.k.a. maca and reishi, you will add great beneficial value to your hot chocolate mix. They are the new generation or actually the old generation of superfoods. Reishi for example has always been an essential part of the tradional chinese medicine. So what do they actually do? The names gives it away. Their superpower lies in the capability to adapt to whatever the body is dealing with and reduces the symptoms. To my Adaptogenic Hot Chocolate Elixir, I have added 2 powerful adaptogens which are reishi and maca.
Maca is a root that grows in the Andes region and is known for its hormone balancing energy boosting effects on the body. Therefore it’s espeacially great for women during PMS and menopause. But my favorite adaptogen must be Reishi. It is a medicinal mushroom which has has the ability to calm body and mind, releases stress and anxiety and has anti-inflammatory benefits. For best results, take adaptogens in small amounts (1/2 tsp per day) consistently over a period of time as the effects are subtle and felt over long-term. Which means in essence have a lot of this hot chocolate stress reliever elixier!
Adaptogenic Hot Chocolate Elixir
- 2/3 cups cocoa powder
- 1/3 carob powder
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 tsp real ground vanilla
- 1 tsp lucuma
- 2 tsp reishi powder (go for a raw product)
- 1 tsp maca powder
- 4 tsp coconut milk powder
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 3 tbsp coconut sugar
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and make sure there are no lumps and everything is combined well. Fill in a airtight jar and use as desired. Use 1 – 1 1/2 tbsp of your Adaptogenic Hot Chocolate Elixir per cup hot oat milk! I don’t like my Adaptogenic Hot Chocolate Elixir particularly sweet but feel free to add more coconut sugar if you like. Finally, for other healing hot winter drinks, check out my Coconut Golden Milk.
Yes please, Nicole! Hint: I am one of these people close at heart! I’d love a little parcel – preferably hand delivered – with some homemade chocolate goodness. When are you finally visiting me in Frankfurt? 😛
I actually tried to make a superfood mix myself some time ago, but wasn’t too pleased. Moreover, I’m new to the adaptogen topic. Do you have any advice where to order the reishi powder and what to look for qualitiy wise?

HI Corinna my love! Awwwe how can I say no to such a lovely request! I will pack you a box next week, promise! I am also not a pro when it comes to the whole adaptogens topic but I am taking maca and reishi on a regular basis. Especially the reishi powder tastes great ( a little earthy but I love it!). When buying adaptogens go for a raw powdered one which is easy to add to anything and if it is raw it is a lot stronger and more powderful as it contains still all the enzymes.
Could you use cacao powder instead of cocoa powder? Also would cashew milk work to mix it in?
Hi Nancy, yes you absolutely can! And cashew milk is perfect with the Hot Chocolate Elixir. In fact all plant based milks work just fine!
