It seems like everyone has a box subscription nowadays. This must be the new newspaper subscription. Companies offering subscriptions for cooking boxes, beauty boxes, fashion boxes fitness boxes etc. In case you didn’t know: you can subscribe for anything including sextoys and pet accesoires.
I admit I do like the box concept. Waiting for the box to arrive and being all jiggely about the arrival of the new upcoming box excites me. So I did what probably lots of you have done: I subsribed to a box. But not just any box but a vegan beauty box. And yes, I did get massively carried away with my girly here. 2 weeks later it arrived and well, what can I say? The box was filled with flyers and a magazine which was basically advertising and went straight into the rubbish. I know this is how they fund this whole thing but in general I couldn’t use any of the products that were in the box because they were not my taste or I would not use the product. The next day I cancelled my subscription.
Maybe it is a bit too much to ask for but I like to be inspired by the box concept and content, I want to learn new stuff and or learn how to make stuff. Yes, I really want to learn new stuff – that’s my motivation. While researching for alternative ‘good’ box subscriptions, I was astonished what I found. The coolest kick-ass subscriptions ever. Beauty box – get lost! I hope you love what i found and I cannot wait to show you:
Raw Spice Box Subscription from Raw Spice Bar – Price: $6/month
Raw Spice Bar seeks out unique spices and flavors from around the world and sends you three flavor kits a month with recipe ideas. They also provide you with recipes and stories around the origin and use of the spices which really inspires you to dive into trying new foreign dishes.
Just the idea someone sending me organically sourced spices I didn’t even know existed really fascinates me. But being a vegan and a really passionate cook this is magic for me. I always had a huge appreciation for spices as they always add the last bit of greatness to a dish. So the people of the Raw Spice Box do not only send you a monthly box of spices but every box has a theme or a country that it relates to. They also email you recipes and suggestions what to do with the spice – cooking and baking. No rubbish flyers – everything is being sent out by newsletter. Very conscious, don’t you think? So the first box I received also contained saffron among other spices. Hands down, I have never used saffron at all in anything. And I made a saffron cake as suggested by Raw Spice Bar and I loved it! What a flavor. I love the fact that I would have never discovered how good this is without that box. Learning new facts about food and their benefits, being inspired by new recipes, I think the people from the Raw Spice Box have figured out how to amaze a foodie.
Globe In Box- Price: $30–$35/month
Globe In offers products from fair-trade artisans and farmers from around the world and lets you know exactly where the products in your themed box come from. There boxes are themed according to their content so past boxes included a Wander box containg a travel journal and drawstring backpack from Sri Lanka, a palm leaf basket from Mexico, and an insect repellent from Sudan. I love that Globe In supports their artisan suppliers to become self sustained! My favorite was by far the Kitchen Box!
Homegrown Collective Box – Price: $34–$39/month.
You will love this one – it is my absolute favorite and has taken my creative sustainable loving heart by storm. Homegrown Collective aims to help people to be more self-sustaining and eco-consious by providing you with things you can grow (or make) that reflect the current season (for example, natural ingredients to make shower vapor discs during flu season).
A box that teaches you stuff. No kidding. A tutorial in a box. I got so excited just reading about this box I was holding my breath. Loved the idea. So my first box came. No rubbish, no fancy glossy throwaway flyers. Everything is packed in recycable cardboard material. When you open the box you will see the month’s manual for the DIY and why the project is important. So this months it contains a DIY for making a candle from vegan soy wax, an oil lamp and an emergency light too. Plus you will get all the containers and the lemon oil. The very next day I made the candle and the oil lamp and they both now sit on my balcony and I am dead proud. It was so easy and so much fun I don’t think I am going to buy any candles any time soon. You know what’s the best part about this box? Knowing you have learnt something and made something with your own hands from scratch. Knowing it is made by you and therefore it becomes personal and has value to you and others. That’s why this handmade/DIY movement is so big right now because it feels great to create! Plus it is informative letting you know what fragrances are being used by the industry and why to chose natural ones. Yes, my kind of box!
So if you do feel like going for a box subscription – go for the right one!
